Historically, aside from J. M. W. Turner, few artists worked as hard to capture light on canvas as Claude Monet (1840‑1926). Described by Cézanne as “just one eye, but my God, what an eye!” Monet was the sole Impressionist who remained faithful to the principle of painting objects directly. Inspired by Japanese art, his military service in Algeria, and his encounters with the great painters of the 19th century, Monet rediscovered color as an explorer. Over his long career, his works forever changed the way we perceive nature and its phenomena. The pinnacle of his investigations is the series of water lilies created in his own Giverni garden, which are often regarded as the roots of abstract art.
