Munich University Botany Professor and Royal Botanic Gardens Director Carl Friedrich Philipp von Martius was reinterred on 15 December 1868 in a casket surrounded by fresh palm leaves. The leaves referenced the groundbreaking Natural History of Palms: a three‑volume work published between 1823 and 1853. This encyclopedic treasure of 240 exquisite chromolithographic illustrations was based on von Martius’s discoveries made via Brazil and Peru.
