Impregnation, also known as dip impregnation, is the process of introducing various chemicals into wood by different methods. This process protects the wood from fungi, insects, termites and other pests, thereby extending its service life. The impregnation agent penetrates only the sapwood portion of the timber. Due to the dense cell structure of heartwood, the impregnation solution does not penetrate the heartwood, which is naturally durable. Therefore, only sapwood is suitable for impregnation. The impregnation process varies depending on the wood species, the intended environment, and the desired service life. As the name suggests, the dip method involves immersing the wood completely in a tank filled with impregnation solution, followed by a 24‑hour curing period. The method is fast, efficient, and cost‑effective. Because it requires less time and lower labor and storage costs, it is cheaper than pressure‑based systems. Immersion is recommended for protecting unfinished wood. - It is a protective treatment. - It aims to prevent termite and insect infestation. - For durability, it is recommended to follow up with varnish applications to preserve the impregnation’s effect over the long term. - In covered structures (e.g., picnic gazebo), it provides up to 1 year of protection. - On items such as pergolas, benches, and picnic tables, protection lasts 6 months – 1 year. - The impregnation material may impart a slight color to the wood, but it does not provide full protection against pigment fading or outdoor weathering.
