Impregnation, also known as dip impregnation, is the process of treating wood with various chemicals using different methods. This treatment protects the wood from pests such as fungi, insects, and termites, thereby extending its service life. The impregnation agent penetrates only the sapwood; due to the dense grain of the heartwood, the solution does not enter the heartwood, which is naturally durable. Therefore, the wood to be treated must be sapwood. The impregnation process varies depending on the wood species, intended environment, and expected service life. In the dip method, the wood is fully submerged in a tank filled with the impregnation solution and then allowed to dry for 24 hours. This method is fast, efficient, and cost‑effective. It requires less time, lower labor, and reduced storage costs compared to pressurized systems, making it a cheaper alternative. Dipping is recommended for protecting untreated lumber. • Acts as a protective chemical. • Prevents wood from being infested by termites and insects. • For durability, it is advisable to follow up with varnish treatments to maintain the impregnation's effectiveness over time. • Provides up to 1 year of protection in covered structures (e.g., picnic gazebo). • Offers 6 months – 1 year of protection for urban fixtures such as pergolas, benches, and picnic tables. • The color of the impregnation material slightly stains the wood, but it does not fully shield the wood from all coloring agents or outdoor exposure.
