It is semi‑permeable, moldable, and highly durable, offering low cost and high resistance, making it popular in industry. Its mechanical properties depend on molecular weight, crystalline structure, and branching. While properties vary by type, it generally provides good resistance to outdoor conditions and moisture, flexibility, modest mechanical strength, and excellent chemical resistance. Polyethylene is used to manufacture slides, stairs, handrails, barriers, accessories, roofing, etc. To prevent color fading, masterbatch pigments used for coloring polyethylene must have a lightfastness rating of 6 or higher. The material thickness should be at least 6 mm (0.2 in) in areas subject to pressure or friction, and at least 4 mm (0.2 in) for barrier or shading products not subject to pressure.
