Catalan-born Joan Miró (1893–1983) was a towering figure of modern art with a seven‑decade career. He produced masterpieces in painting, sculpture, artist books, wall hangings, and ceramics, embracing movements such as Fauvism, Surrealism, Dada, Magic Realism, Cubism, and abstraction. Miró consistently pursued the imaginative worlds he created, steering clear of the “bourgeois” art critics' classifications and approvals. In the early 1920s he produced works that nourished public access to Fauvism and Cubism. As his career progressed, he turned toward Surrealism and became one of its most celebrated practitioners, employing Lyrical Abstraction and Color Field painting techniques. In later years he expanded his portfolio to include ceramics and textiles, and even crafted sculptures from gas. This book showcases Miró’s vibrant colors and dream‑like symbols, detailing his fascinating career, his interaction with major modernist movements, and how he became a modernist legend.
