The term "symbolist" was first applied to the poems of Stéphane Mallarmé and Paul Verlaine in 1886, and later to visual arts as a realistic depiction of the world. Symbolism is a broad international phenomenon, but it was present in France, where painters such as Gustave Moreau and Odilon Redon supported realism, naturalism and impressionism to fill their canvases with often erotic visions. Instead of Monet’s light‑filled landscapes or Courbet’s working‑class subjects, Symbolists turned to figures from literature, the Bible, and Greek mythology to express love, fear, pain, death, sexual awakening, and unrequited desire. Featuring outstanding works by Edward Burne‑Jones, Puvis de Chavannes, Gustav Klimt, James Abbott McNeill Whistler, Gustave Moreau, Odilon Redon, and many others, this book introduces the intensity and impact of Symbolism.
