Munich University Botany Professor and Royal Botanic Gardens director Carl Friedrich Philipp von Martius was transferred on December 15, 1868 to a coffin wrapped in fresh palm leaves. The leaves served as a reference to the groundbreaking Natural History of Palms: a three‑volume work published between 1823 and 1853. This encyclopedic treasure of 240 exquisite chromolithographic illustrations was based on von Martius’s discoveries made across Brazil and Peru. From 1817 to 1820, he traveled 2,250 km through the Amazon basin with zoologist Johann Baptist von Spix to study natural history and indigenous peoples.
