Impregnation, also called pressure impregnation, introduces chemicals into wood using various methods. The treatment protects wood from fungi, insects, and beetles, extending its service life. The chemicals penetrate only the sapwood; the dense heartwood does not absorb the solution because it is naturally durable, so only sapwood should be treated. The process varies with wood species, intended environment, and required service life. The immersion method submerges the wood in a tank filled with the impregnation solution and then allows it to dry for 24 hours. This method is fast, efficient, and economical—requiring less time, labor, and storage than pressure systems, making it cheaper. Immersion is recommended for protecting untreated lumber. - Acts as a protective agent. - Prevents beetle and insect attack. - For durability, follow with varnish to preserve the impregnation longer. - Provides up to 1 year of protection in covered areas (e.g., picnic gazebo). - Offers 6 months to 1 year of protection for urban fixtures such as pergolas, benches, and picnic tables. - The impregnation material may give a slight tint, but it does not fully prevent color change or outdoor effects.
